Overview
The Milky Way is part of the Local Group of galaxies, which is itself a component of the Virgo Supercluster and the Laniakea Supercluster. The Milky Way has several satellite galaxies. The galaxy's name comes from its appearance as a hazy band of light in the night sky, formed from stars in other arms of the galaxy that are too far away to be individually distinguished by the naked eye. The Milky Way has been studied extensively by astronomers, including William Herschel, who discovered many of the galaxy's satellite galaxies.
